We are planning a trip back east. I wanted to see places in Hartford where my family was in the 1600's. My Rebecca maiden name unknown..Mudge/Greensmith and her 3 hubby Nathanail Greensmith were hung for Witchcraft on Gallows Hill...can that still be found? A pamphet would be nice, too.

A friend of mine is looking for Mrs. Bonita Beason, born december 7,1941. In the eighties she lived in Naples, Florida and was working in the real estate business. There were some signs pointing to Hartford. I would be very glad if anyone should take contact with me. Thanks in advance.

I've been trying to confirm the statement that Johnny Sain played for a Hartford baseball team. All I've been able to find is that he pitched in Braves/Red Sox exhibition games there in the late 1940s. I tracked down Jim Thorpe (1922) and Leo Durocher (1925), but not Sain.

Also, I have virtually no information about the ballparks used by Hartford teams in the minor leagues up to 1952.

My grandfather, John Wylie Malcolm, was born in Hartford's 10th Ward in 1894. I'd like to know anything, like where in Hartford would that have been? He and his father took part in building the Wethersfield Ave. brownstones, so I've been told. Great website!

My Mom sent me to a tobacco farm to work one summer at the age of 15-16, and I am trying to locate this place. Years(1973-1975)
It was a adventure for me, and so much fun!
We took a bus with a bunch of us kids up to
the farm, and we lived there in dorms. They would take us to the tobacco place on the busses for work, and would go to Boston, NY for our shopping tours. Could you please help me find this attraction? It would mean so much!

Great site; I lived in NY for 3 years and visited New England many times. Hartford was always a stopping place for us on our tours. Karen's photos bring back so many memories of places and people. The one dark spot is the Hunger Strike memorial erected by Irish-Americans sympathetic to the IRA and naively tolerated by natives as some romantic commemoration against British oppression. Coming from Northern Ireland I know too well the divisive nature of this memorial; the purpose of the hunger strike was to re-gain political prisoner status for IRA terrorists. The majority of people in Northern Ireland thankfully were firmly against this. To see how 'political' the crimes of the IRA were visit www.iraatrocities.fsnet.co.uk, or better still visit Northern Ireland (but not on an Irish NORAID-censored tour) and see for yourself; don't fear truth! For me personally, this memorial in Hartford 'justifies' the murder of a dear relative as a political act of conscience (La Mon bombing 17/2/7, and venerates the perpetrators as better than common criminals. As such its an aberration in an otherwise beautiful place. Keep up the good work Karen.

What a wonderful website and tour of the city I call home. Your photo-tour is awesome! I grew up on Nilan St in southwest Hartford in the '50's - my grandparents had been there since the '30's by way of Bonner St & Hillside Ave. At that time Nilan Street was such an ethnically-mixed neighborhood. My grandparents were Swedish, the Italians had the big house and yard on the corner with a wonderful truck farm [I believe it had once been Mayor Moylan's home?], we had Hungarians and Slavs down the street, the "English" and the Project down the hill. We'd catch the bus on New Britain Ave to G Fox and Brown Thompson's downtown, hang out in Goodwin Park and ice skate at Pope Park. Oh, the memories ... thank you, Karen for this work of love for those of us who connect with Hartford.

Please could you send me information about a school called Clarence A. Barber. My Mother Willamena Lees went there around 1923. She was born in Hartford and the emigrated with her parents (my grandparents) to England 1932. My grandfather was Master Mason, and my grandmother wrote to the local papers about the treatment of Black people then. I shall try and get information which paper it was.

I grew up in Central Mass., and have lived in Florida for fifteen of the last twenty years, but now I'm coming home to New England to settle in Hartford and I couldn't be happier. I think it's a great place to raise my family, and I want the people of Hartford to know that there's no place like New England. You may not believe it at times, but we truly live in the best part of the country. Keep up the good work!
