thank you for the wonderful anthology and karen for your photos. I was born in hart.hosp. and moved to w.hart. as an infant. I was third generation( both sides of my family) to live in hart. and its suburbs.i remember as if it were yesterday going with my father to hart. chiefs games, watching with my cousins and sister movies at the lowe's; goingwith friends to alan freed rock and roll shows at the state theater. playing golf at goodwin park. ice skating and playing tennis at elizabeth park, with its beautiful rose gardens. musthave passed the statue of lafayette thousands of times. taking the bus downtown to go shopping at g fox, sageallen and brown thompson's. worked many summers in my father's restaurant in the traveler's building(traveler's spa). though i have lived in calif. for many yrs., i look back to my youth and remember what a great area hart. and its suburbs was such a great area to gro up in.
as bob hope would have said "thanks for the memories". g. lassoff m.d.

I was raised in Hartford and have been in the metro Atlanta area for 17 years. Thank you very much for this website! I truly enjoyed it and it made me realize how beautiful and wonderful my home town is. I truly enjoyed my childhood in Hartford. Walking through the graveyards reading the stones, jumping double dutch, fishing with my dad, the merry go round at Bushnell park, riding my bike from Albany Ave to Brainard Airport and the variety of ethnic foods was always a plus. We would walk from the west end to the north end and there was so much mystery in the older colonial buildings that when we passed them over and over again we would wonder what kind of people lived in them and what happened to them. Hartford had everything, history, culture and real neighborhoods. Thanks Again!!

Your cemetary must include a picture of the grave of Lena Cadwalader Evans who was very prominent in NYC society in the 1900s.
Her sister who fascinates me died on the famous Titanic ship in 1912
Her mother lived in a very beautiful affluent area in Manhattan which I found.

A truly wonderful site. As a newer resident of downtown Hartford, I'm surprised by the breath of information available here. Thanks for filling in the cultural and history back drop for me.

I really enjoyed your site. I found it VERY interesting in all aspects. As a small boy I lived in Charter oak terrace for a few years in the mid 60s. But my family moved out before it got to out of hand. I remember on our way to school { Mary Hooker school } one day a girl hung me over a bridge or tressle until my siblings gave over thier milk money. I guess my parents figured that was enough and so we moved out of the city. I've always loved the history and structures of Hartford though. I can and will spend many hours on this site. And will take trips to the city becouse of something I;ve seen on this site. Next week I'm going to check out the Wadsworth museum. Thanks again Tom W

I've heard that they may close down the Old State House. How can this happen? I can't imagine Hartford without the Old State House. What can we do to keep this up and running?

What a fantastic trip down memory lane. Thank you for a great web site. I was born in Hartford in 1927 and was raised on Annawan Street- attended St. Peters and Graduated from Bulkeley High. Relocated to Florida 1959 and still have a very soft spot in my heart for Hartford.

While researching the history of Sage-Allen to explain a wedding gift for a nephew, I found your site. Beautiful! The photos evoke fond memories of erly years in CT. My family lived in Windsor for several years, where my father's family (Brown) had owned a tobacco farm. My grandmother lived with a great-aunt and uncle on Rowe Avenue, so I frequently visited Elizabeth Park and the Mark Twain House with her. Currently, a wicker rocking chair from the Rowe Avenue house that the Nearys had owned sits on our deck in PA. The neighborhood began to change in the 1980's during my last visits to that area, and I remember new home owners cutting down some beautiful trees and small stores closing. I wonder what the neighborhood looks like today, since I cannot find Rowe Avenue on the map. I am forwarding your site to my brother and sister so that they can walk down memory lane with me. Thank you.

Whoever is to be maintaining Zion Hill Cemetery should be ASHAMED of the conditions. There are gravestones that are damaged, there hasn't been a lawn service in months as grass is overgrown, branches are in the way of the path of the cars .. it's awful and it should be addressed. You should be embarrassed.

We are planning a trip back east. I wanted to see places in Hartford where my family was in the 1600's. My Rebecca maiden name unknown..Mudge/Greensmith and her 3 hubby Nathanail Greensmith were hung for Witchcraft on Gallows Hill...can that still be found? A pamphet would be nice, too.

A friend of mine is looking for Mrs. Bonita Beason, born december 7,1941. In the eighties she lived in Naples, Florida and was working in the real estate business. There were some signs pointing to Hartford. I would be very glad if anyone should take contact with me. Thanks in advance.

I've been trying to confirm the statement that Johnny Sain played for a Hartford baseball team. All I've been able to find is that he pitched in Braves/Red Sox exhibition games there in the late 1940s. I tracked down Jim Thorpe (1922) and Leo Durocher (1925), but not Sain.

Also, I have virtually no information about the ballparks used by Hartford teams in the minor leagues up to 1952.
